SS 0727 Heat Treatments

  • Stress relief annealing refers to reducing internal stresses in the material without affecting the strength properties. For cast iron 07 27, 550-650°C and a holding time of 1 h for every 25 mm of material thickness, but at least 1 h. Free cooling or, if the shape of the material so requires, cooling in a furnace to 350°C and then free cooling. Normalizing involves heating to about 900°C and then relatively rapid cooling to about 650°C, possibly followed by stress relief annealing. Quenching increases strength and hardness. The material is cooled in oil from 840-880°C and then tempered to the desired hardness. Bainite hardening increases strength and hardness. The material is austenitized at 840-880°C, followed by isothermal transformation at 300-400°C in a salt bath. Surface hardening can be achieved by flame hardening or induction hardening.
