CSN 19 436 Heat Treatments
- Forging at 1050 to 850°C, slowly cooling, eg in dry ash or oven.
Soft annealing at 750 to 780°C, several hours of warming (by piece size), usually 4 hours and slowly cooling in the oven.
Annealing to reduce stress at 600 to 650°C, 1 to 2 hours to warm up and slowly cool in the oven.
Stronger objects heat at a hardening temperature of at least 20 minutes. When hardening for secondary hardness (nitrided tools, etc.), a hardening temperature of about 1080°C and a setting temperature of about 500°C is used.
Hardening in oil at 930 to 960°C, shaped articles in oil at about 80°C or thermally in a bath of about 450°C.
Hardening in air at 950 to 980°C, in the air stream, less than about 30 mm thick.
Tempering at 100 to 300°C, cooled in the air, the degree of tempering is governed by the necessary hardness and toughness of the tool.
