B.S. 897 M 39 Heat Treatments
- Harden in oil from a temperature of 920–970°C.
Temper at a suitable temperature between 550°C and 720°C.
This steel is suitable for nitriding. When the steel is to be nitrided, electric quality steel should be used. If an impact test after dummy nitriding is required, the test material shall be heated to 490–510 °C for not less than 48 h, and the impact test requirements shall be subject to an agreement between the manufacturer and the parties concerned. - Z - Hardening (cooilng in air or oil): 920-970 C; Tempering: t >= 500 C Comment: This condition is not suitable for nitriding. Nitriding - (1313 N/mm2) condition: Hardening (cooling in air or oil): 920-970 C; Tempering: 570-650 C; Stabilizing: 520 C; Nitrogen hardening: 490-510 C;
