Generic ZK21 Heat Treatments
- The alloy was prepared by gravity casting under the protection of CO2 and SF6 mixture. Pure magnesium (≥99.99%) was melted first, with pure Zn (≥99.995%) added at 720°C and Zr added at 750°C as Mg-30%Zr (impurities ≤ 0.15%), and finally with Sc added at 780°C as Mg-2%Sc (impurities ≤ 0.1%). The melt was held at 780°C for 30 min to ensure the complete dissolution of Zr and Sc. After 1 min stirring and 3 min standing, the alloy was cast in a permanent mould at pouring temperature 740°C and mould temperature 200°C.
