SAE Inconel 706 Heat Treatments

  • Solution Heat Treatment
    Bars
Shall be solution heat treated by heating to a temperature within the range 927 to 982°C (1700 to 1800°F), holding at the selected temperature within ±14°C (±25°F) for a time commensurate with cross-sectional thickness, and cooling as required.
    Forgings and Flash Welded Rings
Shall be solution heat treated by heating within the range 927 to 982°C (1700 to 1800°F), holding at the selected temperature within ±14°C (±25°F) for not less than 30 minutes, and cooling as required.
    Stabilization Heat Treatment
Heat to 843°C ± 14°C (1550°F ± 25°F), hold at heat for 3 hours ± 0.25 hours, and cool to room temperature at a rate equivalent to air cooling.
    Precipitation Heat Treatment
    Heat to 718°C ± 8°C (1325°F ± 15°F), hold at heat for 8 hours ± 0.25 hours, furnace cool at a rate not faster than 56°C (100°F) per hour to 621°C ± 8°C (1150°F ± 15°F), hold at 621°C ± 8°C (1150°F ± 15°F) for 8 hours ± 0.25 hours, and cool at a rate equivalent to air cooling. Instead of the 56°C (100°F) per hour cooling rate to 621°C ± 8°C (1150°F ± 15°F), the furnace cooling may be at any rate provided the time at 621°C ± 8°C (1150°F ± 15°F) is adjusted to give a total precipitation heat treatment time of 18 hours.
  • Solution heat treated: It is recommended that the product be solution heat treated by heating in a suitable protective atmosphere to a temperature within the range 927°C - 982°C (1700°F - 1800°F), holding at the selected temperature within ± 14°C (± 25°F) for a time commensurate with section thickness but not less than 5 minutes, and cooling at a rate equivalent to an air cool or faster.
After Stabilization and Precipitation heat treatment: The product 0.25 to 25.40 mm in nominal thickness, shall be stabilized and heat treated by heating to 843°C ± 8°C (1550°F ± 15°F), holding at heat for 3 hours ± 0.25 hour, and cooling in air to room temperature and precipitation heat treated by heating to 718°C ± 8°C (1325°F ± 15°F), holding at heat for 8 hours ± 0.25 hour, cooling at a rate of 56°C (100°F) degrees per hour to 621°C ± 8°C (1150°F ± 15°F), holding at 621°C ± 8°C (1150°F ± 15°F) for 8 hours ± 0.25 hour, and cooling in air. Instead of the 56°C (100°F) per hour, cooling rate to 621°C ± 8°C (1150°F ± 15°F), furnace cooling may be at any rate provided the time at 621° ± 8°C (1150°F ± 15°F) is adjusted to give a total precipitation heat treatment time of not less than 18 hours.
