SAE 7449 Heat Treatments
- Solution heat treatment: heat to 460 to 477°C (860 to 890°F), hold at heat for a time commensurate with product thickness, rapidly cool in a suitable quenching medium; Overaging shall be performed at a specific temperature and time as required to meet specific mechanical properties.
- Solution Heat Treatment: Heat to 466 to 477°C (870 to 890°F), hold at heat for a time commensurate with section thickness but not less than 15 minutes, and quench in water.
Over-Aging Heat Treatment: It is recommended that extrusions be over-aged by heating to 121°C ± 4°C (250°F ± 7°F ), holding at heat for 6 to 26 hours, then increase temperature to 150°C ± 3°C (302°F ± 5°F), holding for 15 to 19 hours, and air cool.
