SAE 7249 Heat Treatments
- Solution Heat Treatment: Heat to 466 to 477°C (870 to 890°F), hold at heat for a time commensurate with product thickness and rapidly cool in a suitable quenching medium.
- Solution heat treating at 468°C for all forms (the aging treatment for 7049 alloy shall not be initiated until at least 48h at room temperature have elapsed after quenching), (to avoid stress corrosion cracking of thick 7049 parts, delay between quenching and start of aging should not exceed 72h).
Solution heat treating soaking times and maximum quench delay times is on specifications.
Aging treatment is mandatory. For forgings: Starting temper is W, final temper is T73 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), 1st step: aging at 121°C for 10-12h, 2nd step: aging at 162°C for 6.5-7.5h. For extrusions: Starting temper is W, final temper is T76 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), 1st step: aging at 121°C for 4-28h, 2nd step: aging at 162°C for 4-10.
Full anneal: At 399-427°C, soaking time is minimum 2h (soak times listed are for up to 13 mm maximum thickness. Add 0.5 hour for each additional 13 mm of product or nested stack thickness or fraction thereof over 13 mm), cooling in furnace (furnace cool at 28°C degrees per hour maximum, to 232°C, hold at 232°C for 6 hours, furnace or air cool to room temperature). Stress relief: At 333-349°C, soaking time is minimum 2h (soak times listed are for up to 13 mm maximum thickness. Add 0.5 hour for each additional 13 mm of product or nested stack thickness or fraction thereof over 13 mm), cooling in air.
