SAE 5940 Heat Treatments
- Solution heat treated by heating within the range 1107 to 1121°C (2025 to 2050°F), holding at the selected temperature within ± 14°C (± 25°F) for a time commensurate with section thickness, and cooling at a rate equivalent to an air cool or faster.
Precipitation heat treated by heating to 843°C ± 8°C (1550°F ± 15°F), holding at heat for 2 to 4 h, cooling at a rate equivalent to an air cool to room temperature, heating to 718 ± 8°C (1325 ± 15°F), holding at heat for 8 hours ± 0.5 hour, cooling at a rate of approximately 56°C (100°F) per hour to 621 ± 8°C (1150 ± 15°F), holding at 621 ± 8°C (1150 ± 15°F) for 8 hours ± 0.5 hour, and cooling at a rate equivalent to an air cool.
Tensile properties at 649°C are obtained after heating specimens to 649 ± 3°C (1200 ± 5°F), held at heat for not less than 20 minutes before testing.
