SAE 5950 Heat Treatments
- Solution heat treated in a suitable protective atmosphere, preferably in hydrogen or argon or in a vacuum to a temperature within the range 927 to 996°C (1700 to 1825°F), holding at the selected temperature within ±14°C (±25°F) for a time commensurate with product thickness, and cooling at a rate equivalent to an air cool or faster.
After Precipitation Heat Treatment by heating to 718°C ± 8°C (1325°F ± 15°F), holding at heat for 8 hours ± 0.5 hour, cooling at 56°C ± 8°C (100°F ± 15°F) degrees per hour to 621°C ± 8°C (1150°F ± 15°F), holding at 621°C ± 8°C (1150°F ± 15°F) for 8 hours ± 0.5 hour, and cooling in air. Instead of the 56°C ± 8°C (100°F ± 15°F) degrees per hour cooling rate to 621°C ± 8°C (1150°F ± 15°F), product may be furnace cooled at any rate provided the time at 621°C ± 8°C (1150°F ± 15°F) is adjusted to give a total precipitation heat treatment time of 18 hours. After being re-solution heat treated by heating to 954°C ± 14°C (1750°F ± 25°F), holding at heat for 60 minutes ± 5 minutes, and cooling at a rate equivalent to an air cool or faster and precipitation heat treated as above.
