SAE 6951 Heat Treatments
- Solution heat treating at 529°C for all forms (applies to clad brazing sheet #21 and #22).
Solution heat treating soaking times and maximum quench delay times is on specifications.
Aging treatment is mandatory. For sheets: Starting temper is AQ or W, final temper is T4 or T42 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), aging at room temperatures; Starting temper is T4 or T42, final temper is T6 or T62 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), aging at 160°C for 17-19h. When temper before furnace aging is AQ, W, T4 or T42, the furnace aging treatment may be started immediately after quenching or at any time thereafter.
Full anneal: At 399-427°C, soaking time is minimum 1h (soak times listed are for up to 13 mm maximum thickness. Add 0.5 hour for each additional 13 mm of product or nested stack thickness or fraction thereof over 13 mm), cooling in furnace (furnace cool at 28°C degrees per hour maximum, to 260°C, air cool to room temperature or furnace cool at 28°C degrees per hour maximum, to 232°C, hold at 232°C for 6 hours, furnace or air cool to room temperature). Stress relief: At 333-349°C, soaking time is minimum 0.5h (soak times listed are for up to 13 mm maximum thickness. Add 0.5 hour for each additional 13 mm of product or nested stack thickness or fraction thereof over 13 mm), cooling in air. - Annealing: Soak for 2 to 3 hours at 404°C (760°F); cool at rate of 28°C (50°F) per hour or slower to 260°C (500°F ); further cooling rate optional.
Solution heat treating temperature (for sheet): 524-535°C (975- 995°F) , followed by an air cool and quenched.
