SAE Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo Heat Treatments
- Solution Heat Treatment: Heat to a temperature 14 to 28°C (25 to 50°F) below the beta transus, determined on each heat of alloy, hold at the selected temperature within ±8°C (±15°F) for a time commensurate with section thickness and the heating equipment and procedure used, and cool at a rate equivalent to an air cool or faster.
Stabilization Anneal Heat Treatment: Heat to 595°C ± 14°C (1100°F ± 25°F); hold for not less than 8 hours, and cool at a rate equivalent to air cooling. - Stress relieving temperature shall be 28°C (50°F) below the aging temperature, cooling rate shall be air cool or faster below 454°C (850°F).
Solution heat treated at 966°C (1770°F), quenching for:
1. t < 12.7 mm, air cool or faster;
2. 12.7 < t < 51 mm, air, oil, polymer;
3. t > 51 mm, water.
Solution heat treatment soak times:
1. t < 2.54 mm for minimum 60 min;
2. 2.56 < t < 5.08 mm for minimum 61 min;
3. 5.10 < t < 7.62 mm for minimum 62 min;
4. 7.64 < t < 10.16 mm for minimum 63 min;
5. 10.18 < t < 12.7 mm for minimum 64 min;
6. 12.72 < t < 15.24 mm for minimum 65 min;
7. 15.26 < t < 17.78 mm for minimum 66 min;
8. 17.8 < t < 20.32 mm for minimum 67 min;
9. 20.34 < t < 22.86 mm for minimum 68 min;
10. 22.88 < t < 25.4 mm for minimum 69 min.;
11. 25.42 < t < 38.1 mm for minimum 89 min;
12. 38.13 < t < 50.8 mm for minimum 109 min.
Aging at 593°C (1100°F) for 8h for thicknesses up to 2.5 mm, add 20 min for each additional 12.7 mm or fraction thereof.
