SAE EZ33A Heat Treatments
- Aging (precipitation heat treatment)
Temper T5 - artificial aging from the as-cast (F) condition. Heated for 5 hours at 425°F (218°C) or 2 hours at 650°F (343°C) + 5 hours at 425°F (218°C). Protective atmosphere is not required. Heat treating above 425°F (218 °C) for 5 hours will result in some irreversible loss in high temperature properties due to the precipitates formed and, therefore, is not permitted without specific permission from the cognizant engineering organization. - Precipitation heat treated: heating to a temperature not higher than 246 ± 8°C (475 ± 15°F) for the proper time for this heat treatment, and cooling in air. At least one set of tensile specimens shall be put into a batch-type furnace with each load of castings or into a continuous furnace at intervals of not longer than 3 hours.
When specified by purchaser for applications where high-temperature creep properties are not important, castings shall be heating to a temperature not higher than 346°C ± 8°C (650 ± 15°F) not longer than 2 hours, and cooling in air.
When specimens are heated to 260 ± 3°C (500 ± 5°F), hold at heat for 10 to 20 minutes before testing, and tested at 260 ± 3°C (500 ± 5°F).
