SAE AZ81A Heat Treatments
- Solution heat treatment
Heated at 770-785°F (410-418°C). Incremental steps or a uniform heating rate shall be used to prevent eutectic melting which can irreversibly damage castings. A protective atmosphere containing sufficient sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, or satisfactory oxidation inhibitor shall be used when solution heat treating at or above 750°F (399°C). Recommended soaking time is 16-24 hours (soaking time starts when all temperature control sensing elements are within 10°F (6°C) of the set or offset temperature). Heavy section castings, t ≥ 25.4 mm, may require longer soaking time than indicated. Parts should be quenched after being soaked at the solution heat treating temperature. During the quench, the quenchant temperature shall not rise more than 25°F (14°C).
Rework solution heat treatment
Heated at 775°F (413°C). Recommended soaking time is half an hour.
