- Temper T6
Sand Castings
Solution Heat Treated(1) at 527 ± 6°C (980 ± 10°F), 12 hours;
Precipitation Heat Treated at 154(2) ± 6°C (310(2) ± 10°F), 3-5 hours.
Temper T61
Sand Castings
Solution Heat Treated (1) at 527 ± 6°C (980 ± 10°F), 12 hours;
Precipitation Heat Treated at 154(2) ± 6°C (310(2) ± 10°F), 10-12 hours.
Permanent Mold Castings
Solution Heat Treated(1) at 527 ± 6°C (980 ± 10°F), 6-12 hours;
Precipitation Heat Treated at 154(2) ± 6°C (310(2) ± 10°F), 10-12 hours.
Stress relieve for dimensional stability as follows: (1) Hold at 413 ± 14°C ( 775 ± 25°F) for 5 h. Then (2) furnace cool to 343°C (650°F) for 2 or more h. Then (3) furnace cool to 232°C (450°F) for not more than 1/2 h. Then (4) furnace cool to 121°C (250°F) for approximately 2 h. Then (5) cool to room temperature in still air outside the furnance.
(1) Quench in water at 65 to 100°C (150 to 212°F) except as noted.
(2) Quench in water at 65 to 100°C (150 to 212°F) for controlled time of 10–20 s only, then cool in still air outside the furnance. - Castings and representative tensile specimens shall be solution and precipitation heat treated in accordance with AMS2771 except as follows:
Solution Heat Treatment: Quenching medium shall be an aqueous polymer solution (15 to 30% polymer) or hot water at not lower than 66°C (150°F).
Precipitation Heat Treatment: May begin immediately after quenching; product shall be at temperature for not less than 3 hours.
