SAE 7475 Heat Treatments
- Solution heat treating at 471°C for sheets, plates under 12.7mm. Solution heat treating at 477°C for sheets, plates 12.7mm and over (after normal soaking, increase temperature to 493°C for aclad and 513°C for non clad; minimum soaking time at higher temperatures, 15 minutes and 60 minutes, respectively).
Solution heat treating soaking times and maximum quench delay times is on specifications.
Aging treatment is mandatory. For sheets: Starting temper is AQ or W, final temper is T61 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), 1st step: aging at 121°C for 3-5h, 2nd step: aging at 157°C for 3-3.25h; Starting temper is AQ or W, final temper is T761 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), 1st step: aging at 121°C for 3-5h, 2nd step: aging at 163°C for 10-12h. For plates: Starting temper is AQ or W, final temper is T6 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), 1st step: aging at 121°C for 23-25h; Starting temper is AQ or W, final temper is T76 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), 1st step: aging at 121°C for 3-5h, 2nd step: aging at 163°C for 12-18h; Starting temper is AQ or W, final temper is T73 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), 1st step: aging at 121°C for 3-5h, 2nd step: aging at 163°C for 24-30h.
Full anneal: At 399-427°C, soaking time is minimum 2h (soak times listed are for up to 13 mm maximum thickness. Add 0.5 hour for each additional 13 mm of product or nested stack thickness or fraction thereof over 13 mm), cooling in furnace (furnace cool at 28°C degrees per hour maximum, to 232°C, hold at 232°C for 6 hours, furnace or air cool to room temperature). Stress relief: At 333-349°C, soaking time is minimum 2h (soak times listed are for up to 13 mm maximum thickness. Add 0.5 hour for each additional 13 mm of product or nested stack thickness or fraction thereof over 13 mm), cooling in air. - Annealing: Soak for 2 to 3 hours at 404°C (760°F ); cool to 204°C (400°F) or lower, reheat to 232°C (450°F), and soak for 4 hours; cooling rate optional.
Solution heat treating temperature (for sheet, plate): 471-521°C (880- 970°F) , followed by an air cool and quenched.
Alclad sheet, maximum temperature shall be 507°C (945°F).
