SAE 203.0 Heat Treatments
- Solution heat treatment: heat to 543°C ± 6 (1010°F ± 10), hold at heat for not less than five hours, and quench in boiling water. When permitted by purchaser, castings and tensile specimens may be quenched from the solution heat treating temperature into oil maintained at approximately 77°C (170°F). Cold water or other quenchant may be used when permitted by purchaser.
Precipitation heat treatment: heat to 218°C ± 6 (425°F ± 10), hold at heat for not less than 16 hours, and cool in air. - Solution heat treatment shall be at the temperature: 543°C (1010°F), minimum soak time is 5 hours and Quenched;
A step solution treatment at 513°C (955°F), for not less than 2 hours prior to the noted solution treatment, is recommended.
Temper after Solution treatment shall be T4 and delay at room temperature;
Annealing at 427°C (800°F), minimum soak time is 1 hour; Air cooling;
Aging (precipitation heat treatment):
Condition before Aging W or T4;
Aging at 218°C (425°F), soak time is 16 minimum hours;
Temper T6 after Aging.
