SAE 359.0 Heat Treatments
- Temper T61
Sand Castings
Solution Heat Treated(1) at 538 ± 6°C (1000 ± 10°F), 10-14 hours;
Precipitation Heat Treated at 154 ± 6°C (310 ± 10°F), 10-12 hours.
Permanent Mold Castings
Solution Heat Treated(1) at 538 ± 6°C (1000 ± 10°F), 10-14 hours;
Precipitation Heat Treated at 154 ± 6°C (310 ± 10°F), 10-12 hours.
Stress relieve for dimensional stability as follows: (1) Hold at 413 ± 14°C (775 ± 25°F) for 5 h. Then (2) furnace cool to 343°C (650°F) for 2 or more h. Then (3) furnace cool to 232°C (450°F) for not more than 1/2 h. Then (4) furnace cool to 121°C (250°F) for approximately 2 h. Then (5) cool to room temperature in still air outside the furnace.
(1) Quench in water at 65 to 100°C (150 to 212°F) except as noted. - Solution heat treating: at 526-543°C and 10-14 hours of soaking time; T4 - temper after solution heat treatment; Aging (precipitation) heat treating: aging temperature 149-160°C and 10-12 hours of soaking time with T61 - temper after aging treatment and at 166-177°C and 6-10 hours of soaking time with T62 - temper after aging treatment
