SAE 2017 Heat Treatments
- Solution heat treating at 502°C for all forms.
Solution heat treating soaking times and maximum quench delay times is on specifications.
Full anneal: At 399-427°C, soaking time is minimum 1h (soak times listed are for up to 13 mm maximum thickness. Add 0.5 hour for each additional 13 mm of product or nested stack thickness or fraction thereof over 13 mm), cooling in furnace (furnace cool at 28°C degrees per hour maximum, to 260°C, air cool to room temperature or furnace cool at 28°C degrees per hour maximum, to 232°C, hold at 232°C for 6 hours, furnace or air cool to room temperature). Stress relief: At 333-349°C, soaking time is minimum 0.5h (soak times listed are for up to 13 mm maximum thickness. Add 0.5 hour for each additional 13 mm of product or nested stack thickness or fraction thereof over 13 mm), cooling in air. - Rolled or cold finished, as ordered, and solution heat treated:
Product under 12.70 mm or over 178 mm in nominal diameter or distance between parallel sides shall be solution heat treated to -T4 temper;
Product 12.70 to 178 mm, inclusive, in nominal diameter or distance between parallel sides shall, after solution heat treatment, be stress-relieved by stretching to produce a nominal permanent set of 1 to 3% (-T451 temper);
Product stress-relieved by stretching shall receive no further straightening operations after stretching unless specifically authorized by purchaser
