SS Al Zn4,5Mg1 Heat Treatments
- Thermoforming at 525-475°C, free cooling.
Soft annealing at 475-500°C, fast heating about 1h. Slow cooling 25-30°C/h to about 250°C. Hold time 6-8 h, then free cooling.
Solution at 480 ± 20°C, fast heating. Hold time about 30 minutes after heat warming. Cooling in air. Forced air cooling or water cooling may be required for coarse material. Cooling rate within the critical range of 400-200°C should be at least 2°/s and no more than 5°/s. Higher cooling speed poses a risk of stress corrosion.
Artificially aging at 120 ± 5°C, holding time about 24 hours, free cooling. A shelf life of my 5 days between resolution and warm aging is required to achieve maximum strength. Heating to aging temperature should be slow, for 2-6 hours. So-called age aging: 100 ± 5°C, holding time 4h at 140 ± 5°C, hole time 18h alternatively 120 ± 5°C, holding time 3h at 160 ± 5°C, holding time 3h followed by free cooling, can also used. A holding time of my 2 days between resolution and warm aging is required for maximum strength to be achieved.
