B.S. L 83 Heat Treatments


  • Bars for machining, extruded sections and forgings shall be heat treated as follows:
    1) Solution treat by heating at a temperature of 525 ± 10°C and quenching in water or oil
    2) Precipitation treat by heating uniformly for the requisite period at a temperature between 155°C and 205°C.
    The following temperatures and times at temperature have been found appropriate:
    155-175°C for 10-20h
    180-190°C for 5-12h
    195-205°C for 2-5h.
    Subject to the agreement and conditions of the Inspecting Authority, bars for machining and extruded sections, instead of being solution treated, shall be quenched in water immediately after leaving the extrusion die.
