PROPRIETARY NAS 455 Heat Treatments

  • Full annealing: Metal should be heated to 843°C (1550°F) - 899°C (1650°F), held for 1/2 hour per 25.4 mm of thickness and furnace cooled to 10°C (50°F) per hour maximum to 593°C (1100°F), then cooled in air, water or oil.
Tempering: After hardening, tempering in the range of 204°C (400°F) - 760°C (1400°F) for from 1 to 4 hours will allow the steel to meet a wide range of mechanical properties. Tempering in the range of 399°C (750°F) - 579°C (1075°F) is generally not recommended because of reduced corrosion resistance and impact strength.
Hardening: air cooling or oil quenching from 954°C (1750°F) - 1010°C (1850°F). Oil quenching is preferred for better impact properties.
