PROPRIETARY CarTech No.10 (384) Stainless Heat Treatments
- Annealing: Heat to 1038-1149°C (1900-2100ºF) and quench in water.
Hardening: Cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Hardens very slowly by cold working.
Hot working: Can be forged, hot headed, upset and riveted satisfactorily. Heat uniformly to 1149-1232°C (2100-2250ºF). Do not forge below 927°C (1700ºF). Forgings can be air-cooled, but better corrosion resistance can be obtained if small forgings are water quenched from the hammer and larger pieces are annealed.
Cold working: This steel can be very readily blanked, formed, extruded, coined and swaged. Because of its very slow rate of hardening when cold worked, it is the first choice in the production of most cold-headed and upset parts.
