AISI 52100 Heat Treatments
- Normalizing: 871-927°C (1600-1700°F), air quenched. Normalizing is not recommended practice. Annealing treatment should be used:
Heat to 777°C (1430°F), hold for 20 minutes, and cool at controlled rates, as follows:
777-743°C (1430-1370°F) at a rate not to exceed -6.7°C (20°F) per hour.
743-716°C (1370-1320°F) at a rate not to exceed -12.2°C (10°F) per hour.
716-677°C (1320-1250°F) at a rate not to exceed -6.7°C (20°F) per hour.
Furnace cool to 538°C (1000°F) or below (rate of furnace cool should be 28°C (50°F) per hour or slower). Recommended subcritical anneal temperature is 677°C (1250°F).
Austenitizing: 816-857°C (1500-1575°F). Medium for quenching: oil. Cool immediately after quenching and before tempering; delay shall not exceed 1 hour. Cool to -68°C (-90°F) or lower, and soak for 1 hour minimum.
