SAE Ferrium C61 Heat Treatments
- Bars and forgings shall be normalized by heating to 974°C ± 14°C (1785°F ± 25°F) for a time commensurate with section thickness, 60 min minimum, cooling in air to below 49°C (120°F) and annealed by heating to 679°C ± 14°C (1255°F ± 25°F) for not less than 2 hours, and cooling in air.
Test specimens extracted from product shall conform to the following requirements after being austenitized by heating to 999°C ± 14°C (1830°F ± 25°F), holding at heat for a time commensurate with section thickness, heating equipment, and procedure used, oil quenched (or equivalent) to below 49°C (120°F) followed by cooling to -73°C (-100°F) or lower, holding at temperature for 1 hour, +2 hours/-0 hours, warming in air to above 10°C (50°F), and tempering at 482°C ± 6°C (900°F ± 10°F) for 16 hours ± 2 hours, and cooling in air (or equivalent).
