PROPRIETARY ExELL S-7 SMDQ Heat Treatments
- Stress relieving: To minimize movement during heat treatment, as tress relieve can be used between the rough and finish machine operations of tool making before heat treatment.
Annealing: With a protective atmosphere or vacuum furnace, heat slowly to 1530°F (832°C). Equalize and hold on hour per inch of thickness. Furnace cool 20°F (11°C)/hr to 1000°F (538°C) and equalize. Air cool to room temperature. Hardness - 217 HB max.
Preheating: Heat to 1200-1250°F (649-677°C) and equalize. Continue heating to hardening temperature.
Hardening: Protect against oxidation and decarburization. Austentizing (hardening) temperature range is 1690-1780°F (921-971°C) but hardening is usually at 1725°F (941°C). Typical response is:
Hardening temperature 1700°F (927°C), hold time 60 min, as-quenched hardness 56-60 HRC;
Hardening temperature 1725°F (941°C), hold time 45 min, as-quenched hardness 57-61 HRC;
Hardening temperature 1750°F (954°C), hold time 30 min, as-quenched hardness 57-61 HRC.
Quenching: Typical quenching media include: Circulating air or atmosphere; Forced air or gas; Step quench; Oil (large cross sections). Temper as soon as quenching temperature reaches (120-150°F (49-66°C)).
Tempering: Temper immediately after quenching to about 150°F (66°C). Temper two times with intermediate cooling to room temperature. Should be heated to the desired tempering temperature (40°F (4°C) minimum) and held a minimum of two hours. Select the tempering temperature based on required hardness (tempering between 700-800°F (371-427°C) should be avoided to avoid temper embrittlement). Air cool to room temperature. Repeat for second temper.
Typical tempering temperature responses:
400°F (204°C) - 58 HRC; 480°F (249°C) - 55 HRC; 930°F (499°C) - 52 HRC; 1025°F (552°C) - 49 HRC; 1100°F (593°C) - 44 HRC.
