PROPRIETARY ExELL A-2 Heat Treatments
- Annealing: With a protective atmosphere or vacuum furnace, heat slowly to 1530°F (832°C). Equalize and hold one hour per inch of thickness. Furnace cool 20°F (11°C)/hr to 1000°F (538°C) and equalize. Air cool to room temperature. Hardness - 217 HB max.
Stress Relieving: To minimize movement during heat treatment, a stress relieve can be used between the rough and finish machine operations of tool making before heat treatment. After rough machining, heat the part(s) to 1200°F (649°C), equalize and hold 1-2 hours. Furnace cool to 900°F (482°C) and then air cool.
Preheating: Heat to 1200 - 1250°F (649 - 677°C) and equalize. Continue heating to hardening temperature.
Hardening: Protect against oxidation and decarburization. Austentizing (hardening) temperature range is 1700 - 1720°F (927 - 938°C) but hardening is usual at 1740°F (949°C). Typical response is:
Hardening temperature 1700°F (927°C), Hold time 40 min, As-quenched hardness 62 HRC.
Hardening temperature 1740°F (949°C), Hold time 30 min, As-quenched hardness 63 HRC.
Hardening temperature 1775°F (968°C), Hold time 20 min, As-quenched hardness 63 HRC.
Quenching: Typical quenching media include: Circulating air or atmosphere; Forced air or gas; Step quench; Oil.
Tempering: Immediately after quenching to about 150°F (66°C). Temper at least two times with a minimum 2 hours time for each temper. Typical tempering temperature responses are (based on required hardness):
Tempering temperature: 500°F (260°C), Hardness 58 HRC (Austenitized 1740°F (949°C));
Tempering temperature: 975°F (523°C), Hardness 55 HRC (Austenitized 1740°F (949°C));
Tempering temperature: 1000°F (538°C), Hardness 53 HRC (Austenitized 1740°F (949°C));
Tempering temperature: 1025°F (552°C), Hardness 52 HRC (Austenitized 1740°F (949°C)).
