ASME 50W Heat Treatments

  • Normalizing - a process that involves re-heating as-rolled steel plate to a temperature above the upper transformation temperature (approximately 830 to 900° (1525 to 1650°F), and cooling it in still air. Normalized steels are denoted “N” and are applicable to steel plate.
Quenching and tempering: steel shall be heat treated by quenching and tempering to conform to the mechanical properties required by. Quenching shall be accomplished by uniformly heating the steel to not less than 900°C (1650°F) and then cooling it by liquid immersion or liquid sprays to a temperature less than 320°C (600°F). The steel shall be tempered by uniformly reheating it to a suitable temperature not less than 595°C (1100°F), or as stipulated on the product specification, and then cooled in air or quenched. The heat-treating temperature shall be reported on the test certificates, if required.
