PROPRIETARY Böhler Uddeholm S7 Mold Quality Heat Treatments

  • Soft annealing: Protect the steel and heat through to 830°C. Then cool in the furnace at 10°C per hour to 540°C, then freely in air.
Stress relieving: After rough machining the tool should be heated through to 650°C, holding time 2 hr. Cool slowly to 500°C, then freely in air.
Hardening: Preheating temperature: 600-700°C. Austenitizing temperature: 920-970°C, but normally 940°C. Hardness before tempering:
At 920°C (soaking time 60 min.) approx. 59 HRC
At 940°C (soaking time 45 min.) approx. 60 HRC
At 960°C (soaking time 30 min.) approx. 60 HRC Soaking time=time at hardening temperature after the tool is fully heated through. Protect the part against decarburization and oxidation during hardening.
Quenching media: Vacuum furnace with sufficient overpressure; Forced air or gas; Martempering bath at 180–250°C, then cool in air; Oil (may be a consideration for large cross sections) Note 1: Quenching in oil increases the risk for distortion and cracking. Note 2: Temper the tool as soon as its temperature reaches 50-70°C. Hardness, grain size and retained austenite as a function of the austenitizing temperature.
Tempering: Choose the tempering temperature according to the hardness required by reference to the tempering graph. Temper twice with intermediate cooling to room temperature. Lowest recommended tempering temperature 230°C. Holding time at temperature minimum 2 hr.
