MIL S-10520D Grade 1 Heat Treatments
- The test coupons shall be heated to a temperature above the critical range bt not over 871°C (1600°F) and held at that temperature for the length of time:
for coupon diameter (mm) 25.4 austenitizing time 1/4-1h and tempering time is 3/4-1h
for coupon diameter (mm)19.05-25.4, austenitizing time 1/2-1h and tempering time is 2h
for coupon diameter (mm) 12.7-50.8, austenitizing time 2h and tempering time is 3h
for coupon diameter (mm) 76.2, austenitizing time 2h and tempering time is 4h,
quenched by hand by agitating laterally in still oil, and tempered for the length of time. The oil shall be a light quenching oil having a minimum Saybolt Universal viscosity of 100 seconds at 38°C (100°F). The tempering temperature of the oil shall be maintained between 38°C (100°F) and 66°C (150°F).The tempering temperature shall be at the steel producers option but in no case shall be less than 482°C (900°F).
