DIN 1.8201 Heat Treatments

  • Normalizing and tempering (+NT): 1040-1080°C, air cooling. Tempering: 730-780°C, air cooling. It may be necessary in the case of wall thickness T above 16 mm or T/D > 0.15 to apply quenching and tempering in order to achieve the intended structure and material properties.
  • Hardening and tempering: Normalizing at 1040-1080°C; Tempering at 730-780°C;
    Stress relief annealing after welding: 730-750°C, holding for 2 minutes/mm thickness, min. 120 minutes, cooling in air;
    Stress relief annealing after cold forming: 650-750°C, 2 minutes/mm thickness, min. 120 minutes, cooling in air.
    The holding time begins when the temperature is reached over the whole cross section;
    The notes of the manufacturers of the welding consumables are to be considered when choosing the tempering temperature.
