PROPRIETARY CPM S110V Heat Treatments

  • Annealed: Heat to 900°C, hold 2 hours, slow cool at a maximum rate of 15°C per hour to 595°C, then furnace cool or cool in still air to room temperature. Stress relieved: Annealed Material: Heat to 595-705°C, hold 2 hours, then furnace cool or cool in still air. Hardened Material: Heat to 15-30°C below original temper temperature, hold 2 hours, then furnace cool or cool in still air. Hardened: Austenitize: 1175°C, hold 20 minutes. Quench: Salt quench, interrupted oil quench, positive pressure gas quench or air cool at a minimum cooling rate of 140°C/min to below 540°C. Cool to below 50°C before tempering. For optimum vacuum heat treatment response, a minimum 4 bar gas quench is recommended. Temper: Temper three times, minimum hold time 2 hours at temperature each temper. Cool completely to room temperature between tempers.
  • Annealing: Heat to 900°C (1650°F), hold 2 hours, slow cool at a maximum rate of 15°C (25°F) per hour to 595°C (1100°F), then furnace cool or cool in still air to room temperature.
    Stress Relieving:
Annealed Material: Heat to 595–705°C (1100–1300°F), hold 2 hours, then furnace cool or cool in still air.
Hardened Material: Heat to 15–30°C (25–50°F) below original tempering temperature, hold 2 hours, then furnace cool or cool in still air.
    Hardening:
    Austenitize: 1175°C (2150°F), hold 20 minutes.
Quench: Salt quench, interrupted oil quench, positive pressure gas quench, or air cool at a minimum cooling rate of 140°C/min (250°F/min) to below 540°C (1000°F). Cool to below 50°C (125°F) before tempering. For optimum vacuum heat treatment response, a minimum 4 bar gas quench is recommended.
Temper: Temper three times, minimum hold time 2 hours at temperature each temper. Cool completely to room temperature between tempers. Tempering temperatures:
    200–400°C (400–750°F): Best corrosion resistance
525–540°C (975–1000°F): Maximum hardness and compressive yield strength, reduced corrosion resistance
550–565°C (1025–1050°F): Optimum for best stress relieving and dimensional stability. Tempering any martensitic stainless steel above 400°C (750°F) may reduce its corrosion resistance.
