MIL S-15464B Class 3 Heat Treatments
- Annealing: heated to 10-65°C (50-150°F) above the upper critical point, cooled in the furnace to 399°C (750°F), after which the cooling rate of the furnace may be accelerated. When the temperature of the hottest part of the charge has fallen to 260°C (500°F), the castings may be removed from the furnace and cooled in still air; Normalizing: heated to and held at a temperature of at least 38°C (100°F) above the upper critical point. Castings shall then be removed from the furnace and permitted to cool through the critical range in air; Tempering: heating uniformly at a controlled rate to 593-704°C (1100-1300°F). Mechanical properties of normalized or quenched castings shall be determined after tempering; Stress relief heat treatment - shall be at least 16°C (60°F) but not more than 38°C (100°F) below the tempering temperature; Homogenization: heated to 1010 to 1288°C (1850 to 2350°F) and shall be held at the homogenization temperature a sufficient length of time to minimize harmful heterogeneity by diffusion. The castings shall then be withdrawn to cool through the critical range.
