MIL 52100 Heat Treatments
- Normalizing temperature range 1600-1700°F, air quenched (normalizing is not recommended); Annealing temperature range 1400-1450°F;Heat to 1430°F, hold for 20 minutes, and cool at controlled rates, as follows: 1430° to 1370°F at a rate not to exceed 20°F per hour, 1370° to 1320”F at a rate not to exceed 10°F per hour and 1320° to 1250°F at a rate not to exceed 20°F per hour. Furnace cool to 1000°F or below; (Recommended subcritical anneal temperature is 1250°F); Austenitizing temperature range 1500-1575°F. Size stability may be enhanced by refrigeration. When required, cool to -100°F for 1 hour within 2 hours after quenching and before tempering; Medium for quenching: oil.
