MIL 46193 Heat Treatments

  • Rolling criteria: Hot shearing of slabs followed by slow cooling is recommended. All starting slab material shall be heated to 1700°F ± 25°F (927°C ± 4°C). For all final gages the slab thickness must allow for a min. of 85% reduction. A slab to plate finishing rolling temperature shall not be lower than 1350°F (732°C). A slab to plate reduction of 10 to 20% per pass is recommended along with air cooling and/or spray quenching of top and bottom of oscillating material; Heat treatment: All plates in each lot, including samples, shall receive the same tempering. Local or general heating shall not be performed after final tempering operation. All plates shall be tempered at a temperature of at least 325°F + 25°F (162°C + 4°C) for a total of 30 minutes after the center line of the plate reaches 325°F (162°C). Since material made to this specification may develop stress cracks it is recommended that all plates be tempered immediately after quenching.
