PROPRIETARY AerMet 340 Alloy Heat Treatments

  • Heat Treated: 968°C (1775°F) for 1 hour, air cool, -73°C (-100°F) for 1 hour, air warm, 482°C (900°F) for 2.5 hours, air cool, -73°C (-100°F) for 1 hour, air warm, 482°C (900°F) for 2.5 hours, air cool, -73°C (-100°F) for 1 hour, air warm. The solution treatment temperature range is 968°C ±14°C (1775°F ±25°F) for 1 hour. The solution temperature must be monitored by a thermocouple attached to the load. Water quenching is not recommended. The alloy must be cooled from the solution temperature to 66°C (150°F) within 1 to 2 hours to develop optimum properties. Individual sections larger than 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter or 2.5 cm (1 inch) thick (plate) must be quenched in oil to reach 66°C (150°F) in 1 to 2 hours. The cooling rate of the furnace load must be monitored by a thermocouple attached to the hottest spot in the load to ensure the 2-hour cool to 66°C (150°F) is achieved.
Cold Treatment: Following cooling to room temperature, to obtain full toughness capability, the alloy should be cooled to -73°C (-100°F) and held for 1 hour. The parts can then be air warmed to room temperature. Prior to straightening, a low-temperature stress relief at 177–204°C (350–400°F) for 5 hours following the refrigeration operation will provide an optimal combination of ductility and yield strength for mechanical straightening.
Age: The typical aging treatment for the alloy is a single age at 482°C ±6°C (900°F ±10°F) for 3–8 hours, followed by air cooling to room temperature. Parts made from the alloy should never be aged at a temperature below 468°C (875°F).
