SAE 6551 Heat Treatments
- Austenitized by heating to 875°C ± 14 (1607°F ± 25), holding at heat for a time commensurate with section thickness, heating equipment, and procedure used, air quenched to below 32°C (90 °F), cooling to -73°C (-100°F) or colder, holding at that temperature for not less than two hours, and warming in air to room temperature followed by tempering for 2 hours minimum at 215°C ± 6 (419°F ± 10).
