SAE Ferrium M54 Heat Treatments

  • Bars and forgings: Normalized by heating to 1074°C ± 14°C (1965°F ± 25°F), holding at heat for 60 minutes minimum, and cooling in air to room temperature, and annealed by heating to between 624°C and 679°C (1155°F and 1255°F), holding at heat for 8 hours minimum, and air cooled.
    Response to heat treatment, bars and forgings: solution treated by heating to 1060°C ± 14°C (1940°F ± 25°F), holding at heat for 60 minutes + 30, - 0, quenching in oil (or equivalent), cooling to -73°C (-100°F) or lower, holding at temperature for minimum 1 hour, and air warming to room temperature; and tempered by heating to 516°C ± 7°C (960°F ± 12°F), holding at heat for 10 hours ± 2, and cooling in air (or equivalent).
  • Final heat treatment condition:
    Aged: Solution heat treating at 1060°C (1940°F); Air, Oil, Polymer, PPGQ; Within 8 hours of quenching, cooling to -68°C (-90°F), or colder for 1 hour per 25.4 m of thickness or fraction thereof, and warm to ambient; Aging: 516°C (960°F) for 8-12 hours.
    All parts shall be in the normalized or normalized and annealed condition prior to solution annealing.

    Air refers to ambient air. When vacuum furnaces are used for heat treating, cooling in the backfilling gas is acceptable where cooling in still air or air cool is specified.
    If hardness exceeds the maximum specified, parts may be re-aged at the same or higher temperatures for a time not to exceed given values to obtain the required hardness.
    To produce a lower hardness for pretested material, a set temperature up to 6°C (10°F) higher than specified may be used.
    Soaking time for solution heat treatment is depending on thickness of the products.
    Tolerance for soaking time shall be +10, -0 minutes for 30 minute ages; +15, -0 minutes for 1 hour ages; +30 minutes, -0 minutes for longer ages.
    For sub-zero treatments, interruptions of the soaking period are permitted. The total soak time shall not include any time when the temperature is greater than -68°C (-90°F) due to interruptions.

    Normalizing at 1075°C (1967°F); Cooling to ambient temperature; Heating to 799°C (1470°F); Soaking for 1 hour; Air or atmosphere cooling to ambient prior to annealing;
    Annealing at 624°C (1155°F); Soaking minimum 8 hours; Air or gas cooling in a vacuum furnace, or atmosphere cooling to ambient.
    Annealing is performed to facilitate machining.
