SAE Custom 450 Heat Treatments

  • The product shall be solution heat treated by heating to 1038°C ± 14°C (1900°F ± 25°F), holding at heat for a time commensurate with section thickness, and cooling as required. Plate over 31.25 mm (1.250 inches) in nominal thickness shall be quenched in a suitable medium.
    After being precipitation heat treated by heating to 482°C ± 8°C (900°F ± 15°F), holding at heat for 4 to 8 hours, and cooling in air.
  • Bars, Wire, Mechanical tubing, Forgings, and Flash welded rings: Solution heat treated;
    Bars (rounds): Solution heat treated and centerless ground;
    Bars (squares, hexagons and flats): Hot finished, solution heat treated, and descaled, or solution heat treated cold drawn, and descaled;
    Wires: Solution heat treated and cold drawn;
    Mechanical tubing: Cold finished and solution heat treated;
    Bars, wire, forgings, mechanical tubing, and flash welded rings shall be solution heat treated by heating to 1040 ± 15°C (1900 ± 25°F), holding at heat for not less than 1 hour, and cooling rapidly;
    Precipitation heat treatment: Samples from the product shall have given mechanical properties after being precipitation heat treated by heating to 480 ± 8°C (900 ± 15°F), holding at heat for not less than 4 hours, and cooling at a rate equivalent to air cooling
