SAE Hy-Tuf Heat Treatments
- Annealing temperature: 760°C (1400°F), cool at a rate not to exceed 111°C (200°F) per hour to below 538°C (1000°F). Normalizing temperature: 941°C (1725°F); Austenitizing temperature: 871°C (1600°F). Hardening quenchant: oil, polymer.
Tempering: 288°C (550°F), at least two tempering operations are required.
All parts, shall be in one of the following conditions prior to austenitizing: normalized, normalized or tempered or hardened. If those parts have been normalized only without tempering or overaging, they shall be preheated before exposure to the austenitizing temperature. - Heat Treated: Normalize by heating to 940°C +/-14°C, holding at heat for 60 minutes +/-10 and cooling in air. Harden by heating to 871°C +/-14°C, holding at heat for 60 minutes +/-10, and quenching in oil at 49-60°C. Temper by heating to 288°C +/-14°C, holding at heat for 2-3 hours and cooling in air.
