SAE 5898 Heat Treatments
- Specimens protected by suitable means or treated in a neutral atmosphere to minimize scaling and prevent either carburization or decarburization, shall have hardness not lower than 58 HRC, or equivalent, after being heated to 1052°C ± 14°C (1925°F ± 25°F), held at heat for 30 minutes ± 3 minutes, and quenched in oil and tempered at 177°C ± 6°C (350°F ± 10°F) for 60 minutes ± 5 minutes.
Sub-zero cooling to -62°C (-80°F) or colder, holding at that temperature for 2 hours ± 0.25 hour, and warming in air to room temperature after oil quenching is optional.
