SAE HY-180 Heat Treatments
- Plate t ≤ 51 mm, solution heat treatment: heated to 829°C ± 14°C (1525°F ± 25°F) and quenched.
Plate t > 51 mm, solution heat treatment: heated to 899°C ± 14°C (1650°F ± 25°F), quenched, reheated to 829°C ± 14°C (1525°F ± 25°F), and quenched.
Aging: Heated to 510°C ± 6°C (950°F ± 10°F), held at heat for not less than 5 hours for sections t ≤ 51 mm and for 10 hours + 0.5, -0, for thicker sections, and cooled at a rate equivalent to air cooling. - Product t < 51 mm: Solution heat treated by heating in air to 829 ± 14°C (1525 ± 25°F) and quenching.
Product t ≥ 51 mm: Solution heat treated by heating in air to 899 ± 14°C (1650 ± 25°F), quenching, reheating to 829 ± 14°C (1525 ± 25°F), and quenching.
Maraged by heating within the range 482 - 510°C (900 - 950°F), holding at the selected temperature within ± 6°C (± 10°F) for not less than 5 hours, and cooling in air.
