PROPRIETARY CRB-7 Heat Treatments

  • Annealing may be done by packing in a suitable container with clean cast iron borings or, preferably, in a controlled atmosphere furnace with a dew point of 35/45°F (1.7/7.2°C). Heat uniformly to 1600/1650°F (871/899°C) and cool slowly in the furnace, not faster than 20°F (11°C) per hour, to about 1100°F (593°C), and air cool to room temperature. This will produce an average hardness of Brinell 241. To relieve machining stresses for greater accuracy in hardening--first rough machine, then anneal below the critical, from 1250/1300°F (677/704°C), and cool slowly; then finish machine. Hardening: Heat treating is similar to high speed steels. Parts should be heat treated from neutral salt baths or properly adjusted controlled atmosphere furnaces. A dew point of +10°F (-12.2°C) is suggested for the high heat furnace when using a controlled atmosphere furnace. First preheat to 1475/1525°F (802/830°C), then transfer to a superheating furnace maintained at a temperature of 2085/2110°F (1140/1154°C). Small parts may be oil quenched to room temperature. However, it is preferable to harden the parts by quenching into molten salt at temperatures of 1000/1100°F (538/593°C), equalizing at this temperature, followed by air cooling to room temperature. The parts may then be given a stress-relief temper at 300°F (149°C) for one hour. For higher hardness and dimensional stability, sub-zero cool to -105°F (-76°C) or lower temperature. Allow the part to return to room temperature before tempering. Tempering: For maximum hardness and dimensional stability, double tempering is recommended. The effect of tempering temperature on the hardness of CRB-7 alloy is shown in the link titled "Effect of Tempering Temperature".
