ABS AB/1 Heat Treatments
- Castings are to be either fully annealed, normalized or normalized and tempered in a furnace of sample proportions to bring the whole casting to uniform temperature above the transformation range on the annealing or normalizing cycle. The furnaces are to be maintained and have adequate means for control and recording temperature. Castings are to be held soaking at the proper temperature for at least a length of time equivalent to 1 h/25.5 mm of thickness of the heaviest member.
No annealed casting is to be removed from the furnace until the temperature of the entire furnace charge has fallen to or below a temperature of 455°C (850°F). A sufficient number of thermocouples are to be connected to the furnace charge to measure and record that its temperature is adequately uniform, unless the temperature uniformity of the furnace can be verified at regular intervals.
Tempering is to be carried out at a temperature of not less than 550°C (1022°F).
