PROPRIETARY Uddeholm Sverker 3 Heat Treatments

  • Soft annealing: Protect the steel and heat through to 850°C (1560°F). Then cool in the furnace at 11°C (20°F) per hour to 650°C (1200°F), then freely in air;
    Stress relieving: After rough machining the tool should be heated through to 650°C (1200°F), holding time 2 hours. Cool slowly to 500°C (930°F), then freely in air.
    Hardening: Preheating temperature: 600-700°C (1110-1290°F). Austenitizing temperature: 920-1000°C (1690-1830°F) normally 940-980°C (1725-1800°F). Protect the part against decarburization and oxidation during hardening.
    Quenching media: Oil, Vacuum (high speed gas), Forced air/gas, Martempering bath or fluidized bed at 180-500°C (360-930°F), then cooling in air. (Temper the tool as soon as its temperature reaches 50-70°C (120-160°F).
    Tempering: Choose the tempering temperature according to the hardness required by reference to the tempering graph. Temper twice with intermediate cooling to room temperature. Lowest tempering temperature 180°C (360°F). Holding time at temperature minimum 2 hours.
    Nitriding: in ammonia gas at 525°C (975°F) for 20 h and depth of case approx. 0.20 mm or 30 h and depth of case approx. 0.25 mm or 60 h and depth of case approx. 0.30 mm.
    Nitrocarburizing: at 570°C (1060°F) and depth of case 0.10 - 0.20 mm.
    Sub-zero treatment: Immediately after quenching the piece should be sub-zero treated to between -70 and -80°C (-95 to -110°F), soaking time 3-4 hours followed by tempering. Sub-zero treatment will give a hardness increase of 1-3 HRC. Avoid intricate shapes as there will be risk of cracking.
    Aging occurs at 110–140°C during 25–100h.
