PROPRIETARY CBS-223 VIM-VAR Heat Treatments

  • Preoxidize: Charge into furnace at 982°C (1800°F). Hold for 40-50 minutes and air cool. A 538-593°C (1000-1100°F) steam treatment or a suitable acid etch may also be considered.
Descale: This may be necessary to remove excess oxide.
    Carburize: 899-927°C (1650-1700°F).
Quench: Furnace cool to 816°C (1500°F), maintaining atmosphere. Air cool to room temperature.
Stress Relieve: Use a subcritical cycle between 593-704°C (1100-1300°F) for 2 hours. Air cool.
Hardening: Preheat between 760-816°C (1400-1500°F) for 1 hour. Austenitize at 1010°C (1850°F) for 15-30 minutes.
    Quench: Oil quench.
Refrigerate (optional): At -79°C (-100°F) for 2 hours, within 4 hours. If cold treatment cannot be started within hours, temper parts at 316°C (600°F) (within 30 minutes preferred).
Temper: Double temper at selected temperature, 2+2 hours.
Annealing: Heat uniformly to 899°C (1650°F) and soak for 8-10 hours. Cool 14-22°C (25-40°F) per hour to 593°C (1100°F). Air cool to room temperature.
