PROPRIETARY CBS-50 NiL VIM-VAR Heat Treatments
- Forging: forge between 982 - 1093°C (1800 - 2000°F). Do not finish below 982°C (1800°F). Slow cool is preferred.
Austenitize and quench: preheat to 816 - 871°C (1500 - 1600°F) then raise to 1093 - 1121°C (2000 - 2050°F) and equalize. Quench immediately into salt maintained at 566 - 621°C (1050 - 1150°F) or into warm oil. Complete the quench in still air to at least 66°C (150°F).
Refrigerate: a cold treatment at -73°C (-100°F) for two hours will minimize the retained austenite in the case structure. It should be performed with a minimum delay after completion of the quench.
Tempering: temper between 524 - 551°C (975 - 1025°F). A double temper is preferred and in some instances, additional tempering cycles may be desired. For each additional cycle, the material should be held at temperature for 2 - 4 hours.
Annealing: temper at 705°C (1300°F) for 2 hours per 25.4 mm of thickness, then air cool to room temperature. Maximum hardness: 255 HBW. - Austenitize and Quench: Preheat to 816-871°C (1500-1600°F) then raise to 1093-1121°C (2000-2050°F) and equalize. Quench immediately into salt maintained at 566-621°C (1050-1150°F) or into warm oil. Complete the quench in still air to at least 66°C (150°F).
Refrigerate: A cold treatment at -73°C (-100°F) for two hours. If a cold treatment is to be used it should be performed with a minimum delay after completion of the quench.
Temper: Tempered between 524-551°C (975-1025°F). A double temper is preferred and in some instances, additional tempering cycles may be desired. For each additional cycle, the material should be held at temperature for 2 - 4 hours.
Subcritical annealing: Temper at 705°C (1300°F) for 2 hours per 25.4 mm of thickness, then air cool to room temperature.
