PROPRIETARY Hiperco 50 Heat Treatments

  • A dry hydrogen atmosphere or high vacuum is recommended to minimize oxide contamination during annealing. When hydrogen is employed and the inside retort temperature is above 482°C (900°F), the entry dew point should be dryer than -51°C (-60°F) and the exit dew point should be dryer than about -40°C (-40°F).
Anneal parts at 704-871°C (1300-1600°F) for 2-4 hours in dry hydrogen or vacuum and cool at 139-222°C/h (250-400°F)/h until 316°C (600°F) is reached, after which any cooling rate can be employed.
The exact heat treat temperature used will depend on the particular application and the desired compromise between magnetic and mechanical properties. Increasing temperature within the range of 704-871°C (1300-1600°F) will result in improved magnetic properties and decreased yield and tensile strengths. However, the temperature should never exceed 871°C (1600°F), as soft magnetic characteristics will start to decline due to formation of an austenitic phase.
