PROPRIETARY Carpenter Stainless Type 440B Heat Treatments
- Annealing: For maximum softness, this steel should be heated uniformly to 843/871°C (1550/1600°F). Soak and cool very slowly in the furnace. Brinell approximately 223. Intermediate or process annealing treatment-heat uniformly to 732/760°C (1350/1400°F). Air cool. Brinell hardness approximately 241.
Hardening: heat to 1010/1066°C (1850/1950°F); soak; quench in warm oil or cool in air.
Tempering: temper at least one hour at 149/177°C (300/350°F).
