PROPRIETARY Carpenter Stainless Type 440A Heat Treatments
- Annealing: For maximum softness - heat uniformly to 843/871ºC (1550/1600ºF). Soak and cool very slowly in the furnace.Brinell approximately 223. Intermediate or process annealing treatment - heat uniformly to 732/760ºC (1350/1400ºF). May be cooled in the furnace or air cooled. Brinell hardness about 230.
Hardening: preheat to 760/816ºC (1400/1500ºF), then heat to 1010/1066ºC (1850/1950ºF); soak; quench in warm oil or cool in air.
Tempering: temper at least one hour at 148/176ºC (300/350ºF).
