PROPRIETARY Carpenter No. 158 Alloy Heat Treatments
- Treatment A: carburize at 871/899ºC (1600/1650ºF), pack cool or air cool. For hardening, heat the parts to 816°C (1500°F), quench in oil. Reheat parts to 774°C (1425°F), quench in oil. Temper at 93/149ºC (200/300ºF).
Treatment B: carburize at 843/871ºC (1550/1600ºF), air cool or pack cool. Heat the parts at 778°C (1450°F), quench in oil. Temper at 93/149ºC (200/300ºF).
Treatment C: parts may be carburized at 843/871ºC (1550/1600ºF) and quenched directly in oil. This should be followed by tempering at 93/149ºC (200/300ºF).
Normalizing: heat to 899/954ºC (1650/1750ºF), cool in air.
Annealing: heat to 677/693ºC (1250/1280ºF), then cool slowly. To secure maximum softness, do not exceed 693°C (1280°F).
Carburizing: Cyanide Treatment - performed in a cyanide salt bath at approximately 788°C (1450°F). Pack and Gas Carburizing - carburize between 816/871ºC (1500/1600ºF) for long enough to secure the desired case depth. Eight hours at 871ºC (1600ºF) will produce a case depth of between 0.76 and 1.02 mm (0.030 and 0.040").
Hardening: harden from a temperature of 774/816ºC (1425/1500ºF) followed by oil quenching. Small sections may be fully hardened by air quenching.
Cold Treatment: it is desirable to cold treat by lowering the temperature to under -73°C (-100°F) and holding for one hour, followed by allowing the steel to come back naturally to room temperature.
Stress Relieving: should be carried out by heating to 593ºC (1100ºF), holding for one hour at heat, followed by air cooling.
